Global energy leader TotalEnergies and resource management specialist Veolia have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to enhance collaboration in key areas of the energy transition and circular economy. The partnership focuses on reducing greenhouse gas emissions, optimizing water use, and advancing innovative technologies for a more sustainable industrial future.

Under the agreement, the two companies will leverage their respective expertise: Veolia in water management and resource recovery from waste, and TotalEnergies in methane emission reduction and low-carbon energy production.

Methane Emission Reduction from Landfills

Veolia is evaluating the deployment of TotalEnergies’ AUSEA drone-based technology to monitor methane emissions at landfill sites. Preliminary trials have demonstrated AUSEA’s accuracy in detecting and quantifying leaks, providing a powerful tool to help Veolia achieve its target of capturing 80% of landfill methane emissions by 2032.

Reducing Water Use in Industrial Operations

Veolia will support TotalEnergies’ goal of reducing freshwater withdrawals by 20% by 2030 at sites in water-stressed regions. Building on prior collaboration with SATORP, a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies, the companies will implement wastewater reuse projects and deploy Veolia’s advanced treatment technologies to enhance effluent quality.

Decarbonizing Desalination

The partnership will also focus on decarbonizing desalination operations, following their joint success in building Oman’s largest solar-powered desalination plant. This initiative supports Veolia’s goal to double desalination capacity by 2030 while reducing its energy footprint.

Recovering Strategic Resources from Waste

TotalEnergies and Veolia will explore the industrial-scale recovery of critical materials—including rare earth elements—from waste streams such as wind turbines, photovoltaic panels, and batteries, securing essential resources for the energy transition.

Veolia CEO Estelle Brachlianoff highlighted that the partnership illustrates how shared innovation can accelerate ecological transformation and boost industrial competitiveness. TotalEnergies Chairman and CEO Patrick Pouyanné emphasized that collaborations of this kind are crucial for achieving measurable reductions in environmental impact.
