TotalEnergies Enhances EV Battery Performance with Immersion Cooling Technology

10 Mar 2025

TotalEnergies Lubrifiants has successfully integrated an immersion-cooled battery into the Renault Mégane E-Tech, marking a major advancement in electric vehicle (EV) battery technology. This innovation demonstrates the viability of immersion cooling on a large scale, offering significant benefits in efficiency, safety, and cost reduction.

In 2022, TotalEnergies first applied its proprietary Cell-Shield fluid technology to a Volvo XC90 plug-in hybrid, replacing conventional battery cooling methods with an immersion cooling system. The results showed immediate improvements, including faster charging, superior thermal management, enhanced safety, and cost savings—without the need for modifications to the vehicle's design.

Building on this breakthrough, TotalEnergies has now integrated the technology into the fully electric Renault Mégane E-Tech. This latest application underscores how immersion cooling can boost battery performance while remaining commercially viable for mass production.

Transforming Battery Technology

Immersion cooling is emerging as a key solution for the future of EVs, addressing growing demands for ultra-fast charging and enhanced battery efficiency. By submerging lithium-ion cells in Cell-Shield fluid, this technique reduces battery size and weight while improving range and safety. Tests on the Renault Mégane E-Tech prototype revealed a 50% reduction in charging time and a 6% increase in vehicle range. The system effectively mitigates overheating risks while maximizing energy efficiency.

Pascal Correia, Director of Technology & Product Engineering at TotalEnergies Lubrifiants, highlighted the significance of this innovation:"We are honored by the trust automakers have placed in us for this groundbreaking project. Our research has showcased the immense potential of immersion cooling, and successfully integrating it into a production vehicle proves its scalability."

With immersion cooling offering unparalleled advantages in battery performance, TotalEnergies Lubrifiants’ latest achievement represents a crucial step towards the next generation of high-efficiency, sustainable electric mobility solutions.
