TotalEnergies and China Petroleum and Chemical Corporation (SINOPEC) have entered into a strategic agreement to establish a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility at one of SINOPEC's refineries in China. This partnership represents a significant advancement in the efforts to cut down aviation’s carbon emissions.
The new facility, co-owned by both companies, is expected to produce 230,000 tonnes of SAF annually. It will utilize cutting-edge technology to process local waste materials, including cooking oils and animal fats, in alignment with circular economy principles to create SAF.
SINOPEC, with its proprietary SAF production technology, SRJET, will collaborate with TotalEnergies, leveraging its strong expertise in SAF production, operations, and distribution.
Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, emphasized the importance of the project, noting, “ The development of sustainable aviation fuels is at the heart of our company’s transition strategy, as we strive to meet the aviation industry’s demand to reduce its carbon footprint. TotalEnergies has set itself a target of 1.5 million tons of annual SAF production by 2030.”
Yongsheng Ma, Chairman of SINOPEC Group, referred to the partnership as a “milestone” aligning with the company’s broader strategy to advance low-carbon solutions both in China and globally.
TotalEnergies has been at the forefront of developing biofuels from waste materials and synthetic e-jet fuels. SAF is recognized for its ability to significantly cut CO2 emissions, aiding the aviation industry’s move toward greater sustainability.
