Shell Launches New MIDEL Transformer Liquids Brand, Expanding Energy Sector Solutions

Shell has officially launched the Shell MIDEL brand globally, marking a major expansion of its transformer liquids portfolio, which now includes both Shell MIDEL and Shell Diala gas-to-liquid (GTL) products. This development represents a significant milestone in the power and energy sector, aimed at fostering innovation, enhancing system reliability, and accelerating the global energy transition.

Shell MIDEL transformer liquids are widely used across the power network, from mainstream power and distribution transformers to specialized transformers serving renewable energy projects, rail networks, mining operations, and industrial facilities. By combining Shell MIDEL’s proven ester-based liquid technology with Shell’s extensive global supply chain, the expanded portfolio will offer clients more advanced, energy-efficient solutions worldwide.

Jason Wong, Executive Vice President of Global Lubricants at Shell, stated:"With the addition of Shell MIDEL, we are broadening our global offering by complementing our Shell Diala GTL range with the outstanding qualities of natural and synthetic ester transformer liquids. Together, Shell MIDEL and Shell Diala create a comprehensive, innovative portfolio ready to meet the evolving demands of power grids across the world."

Highlights of the New Shell Transformer Liquids Portfolio:

  • Expanded Product Line: Shell now offers a complete, end-to-end range of transformer insulating liquids, reinforcing its commitment to delivering reliable, high-performance solutions across the energy value chain.

  • Enhanced Efficiency and Reliability: The broader portfolio delivers improved operational efficiency, reduced downtime, and increased safety.

  • Stronger Environmental Credentials: With Shell MIDEL’s biodegradable, non-hazardous synthetic and natural ester dielectric fluids, alongside Shell Diala products, Shell offers more sustainable alternatives to traditional transformer oils, helping minimize environmental impact.

  • Global Availability: Thanks to Shell’s extensive global network, its transformer liquids portfolio will now be accessible to a wider range of customers in key markets worldwide, providing eco-friendly, high-quality solutions.

Shell’s acquisition of MIDEL and the launch of its revamped transformer liquids portfolio reflect the company's deepening commitment to innovation in the energy sector. This commitment also includes Shell’s acquisition of MIVOLT immersion cooling liquids, previously owned along with MIDEL by UK-based M&I Materials. MIVOLT products serve applications in electrified transport, battery energy storage systems, and data centers.

These strategic acquisitions form part of Shell’s broader strategy to accelerate the global energy transition and meet growing demand for cleaner, more resilient energy solutions.
