Bosch Rexroth has entered into a partnership with PETRONAS Lubricants International (PLI) to co-develop bio-based hydraulic and Universal Tractor Transmission Oil (UTTO) fluids for the off-highway and agricultural vehicle sectors. The agreement was formalized in Turin, Italy, on 22 September 2025.

The collaboration aims to accelerate the shift toward sustainable fluid technologies that enhance energy efficiency and lower emissions. Under the partnership, Bosch Rexroth will define the technical specifications and oversee testing and qualification through its Rexroth Fluid Rating system, while PLI will take charge of product formulation, manufacturing, and global distribution.
The first product from this initiative will be a biodegradable, bio-based ester UTTO fluid engineered for use in hydraulic systems, gearboxes, and wet brakes. PLI reports that the new formulation delivers superior energy efficiency without compromising performance when compared with conventional mineral-based oils.
Bosch Rexroth CEO Dr. Steffen Haack emphasized that the partnership reinforces the company’s commitment to advancing sustainability in hydraulic technologies, highlighting the importance of developing alternatives to mineral oil-based fluids.
PLI Managing Director and Group CEO Khalil Muri noted that the alliance aligns with PLI’s broader industrial strategy to diversify its portfolio and drive the adoption of sustainable solutions. He added that the new fluids could also be utilized in stationary hydraulic systems, helping reduce carbon emissions across various industries.
Initially structured as a five-year agreement, the collaboration is expected to expand into a long-term strategic partnership, including joint efforts to develop new business models for sustainable fluids.
Bosch Rexroth, a division of the Bosch Group, reported sales of EUR 6.5 billion (USD 7.02 billion) in 2024 and operates in over 80 countries. PLI, the global lubricants division of Malaysia’s state-owned PETRONAS, supplies products in more than 100 countries and serves as the technical partner of the Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.
