MOL Group’s lubricants subsidiary, MOL-LUB Ltd., has rolled out a Bag-in-Box packaging solution for its lubricants and engine oils, aimed at significantly reducing plastic consumption and lowering emissions associated with logistics. The company estimates that the new format can cut plastic use by as much as 80% compared with conventional 20-litre plastic canisters, supporting its broader circularity and decarbonisation goals.
The packaging features an inner plastic pouch housed within a recyclable cardboard box. MOL-LUB said the design reduces overall waste volume by up to twelve times while maintaining the durability and performance of traditional packaging. The Bag-in-Box format is being offered in both 5-litre and 20-litre sizes.
Szabolcs Kozma, Managing Director of MOL-LUB Ltd., said the initiative reflects the company’s commitment to embedding sustainability across its operations, while enabling customers to reduce plastic waste without compromising access to proven lubricant products.
Designed to be compact and stackable, the new packaging also improves storage and transportation efficiency. According to MOL-LUB, the 20-litre units can accommodate up to 88% more product per pallet, depending on conditions, helping to lower transport costs and associated emissions. An integrated tap further supports clean, precise dispensing in workshop and industrial settings.
The introduction of Bag-in-Box packaging aligns with MOL Group’s wider SHAPE TOMORROW strategy, which focuses on reducing the carbon intensity of its products and advancing circular economy solutions. The group operates refineries and petrochemical facilities across Central and Eastern Europe and has set a target to achieve net-zero operations by 2050.
