Mercedes-Benz will assemble the Maybach GLS locally in India, the first market outside of the US

12 Jan 2026

Mercedes-Benz India has begun locally assembling the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, making India the only market outside the United States to produce the ultra-luxury SUV domestically. The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to localise more models and strengthen its presence in the high-value, top-end luxury segment.

Mercedes-Benz India Localises Maybach GLS, Reduces Price to Rs 2.75 Crore

Mercedes-Benz India has begun locally assembling the Mercedes-Maybach GLS, making India the only market outside the United States to produce the ultra-luxury SUV domestically. The move is part of the company’s broader strategy to localise more models and strengthen its presence in the high-value, top-end luxury segment.

The ex-showroom price of the locally assembled Maybach GLS has been reduced to Rs 2.75 crore, down from Rs 3.17 crore for the fully imported version, without compromising on features or equipment. “Content-wise, we have not removed anything from the car. It is not a compromised CKD version,” said Santosh Iyer, Managing Director and CEO of Mercedes-Benz India. The localisation programme aligns with both regulatory requirements and global standards.

The decision reflects Mercedes-Benz’s global strategy of prioritising value over volumes. While overall luxury car sales in India remain under pressure, the top-end segment is experiencing faster growth. In 2025, Mercedes-Benz India sold 19,007 units, a marginal decline year-on-year, but achieved its highest-ever revenue, driven by a richer product mix and higher average selling prices. Vehicles priced above Rs 1 crore, including the Maybach GLS and all-electric Mercedes-Maybach EQS SUV, now make up a significant portion of the portfolio.

Electrification is also playing an increasing role in the top-end market. Electric vehicles account for around 20% of Mercedes-Benz India’s premium sales, benefiting from favourable taxation and competitive on-road pricing. To support EV adoption, Mercedes-Benz has expanded its MB.Charge network, providing access to over 9,000 DC fast chargers nationwide.

The localisation of the Maybach GLS underscores growing confidence in India’s ultra-luxury market, even as broader luxury volumes grow modestly due to currency volatility and cautious consumer sentiment. “We are not chasing volume. We are building a strong top-end business with the right products and the right customers,” Iyer added.
