In order to explore the commercial development of converting green Hydrogen toto methanol and sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), Masdar a UAE clean energy company has made an agreement with Total Energies and aims to decarbonise the emissions from the aviation and marine industry.

The process will incorporate CO2 from the industrial sources as the raw material and with green hydrogen produced from renewable sources like powered electrolysis converted to green methanol and SAF. This collaboration has come out of one of the successful test flights during COP28 in December 2023.

Masdar who has been active in the SAF sector in UAE’s General Policy for SAF. This policy targets supplying 1% of Fuel to national airlines with locally manufactured SAF by 2031. This policy also supports Abu Dhabi’s low carbon Hydrogen Policy for the usage of low carbon hydrogen for sustainable growth.

This agreement aims to expand its renewable energy capacity to 100 gigawatts by 2030 and be a leading producer of green hydrogen.

Total Energies are already into energy production and distribution with their expertise. This agreement with Masdar will have a transformative impact on the carbon emissions in the aviation industry.
