Lubrizol Launches Diesel Fuel Additive to Cut Particulate Matter and Maintenance Costs in China

20 Jun 2025

Lubrizol has launched its new diesel fuel additive, Lubrizol® MF9145V, aimed at reducing diesel particulate matter (DPM) formation at the source, lowering the frequency of diesel particulate filter (DPF) regeneration, and ultimately cutting vehicle maintenance costs. The launch was announced in Shanghai, underscoring Lubrizol’s strategic focus on China’s diverse driving conditions and fuel qualities.

The additive enhances fuel combustion efficiency, enabling diesel engines to operate more cleanly and consistently across a variety of demanding scenarios such as heavy-load climbs, frequent stop-start driving, and long-haul transport. It has been specifically formulated to perform effectively with fuels that have variable sulphur content – a common challenge on Chinese road networks.

Henry Liu, Vice President of Lubrizol Asia Pacific and head of the Additives Business, stated that Lubrizol® MF9145V was developed to address China’s complex fuel and operating environment. “The solution ensures efficient combustion while tackling the unique challenges posed by local fuel characteristics and climate conditions,” he said.

The additive underwent extensive laboratory and real-world testing. Bench tests simulating China’s harsh driving conditions showed that engines treated with Lubrizol MF9145V achieved 28% better system flow efficiency and significantly less soot accumulation in the DPF compared to untreated engines.

In field trials on DD13 engines, trucks first underwent a deep cleaning using PowerZol™ ZD9149, followed by continued use of Lubrizol MF9145V. The results demonstrated a 25% reduction in DPF regeneration frequency, improved fuel economy, and enhanced vehicle responsiveness, all of which contribute to reduced operational downtime.

Lubrizol® MF9145V complies with China’s Non-Road Stage IV Emission Standards and is engineered to minimise soot build-up in DPFs under challenging operating conditions. Long-haul fleets benefit from fewer regeneration cycles, construction equipment maintains uptime under heavy loads, and urban delivery vehicles achieve better emissions control during frequent stop-start operations.
