Lubrizol and Tongyi Petrochemical Broaden Strategic Partnership to Global Markets

The Lubrizol Corporation and Tongyi Petrochemical are expanding their long-standing partnership beyond China, with a new strategic framework focused on global market development, supply chain integration, joint product innovation and specialty industrial lubricant opportunities.

The expanded relationship builds on years of cooperation across the Asia-Pacific region and goes beyond traditional additive supply and technical support. Under the new arrangement, the companies intend to work more closely across the value chain, combining their respective manufacturing, technical, market and application capabilities to develop solutions for customers in international markets.

The next phase of the partnership was discussed during a recent visit by a Tongyi Petrochemical delegation led by General Manager Li Jia to Lubrizol’s manufacturing facility, innovation centre and regional office in Singapore. The delegation met with Henry Liu, Vice President for the region at Lubrizol, and members of the regional leadership team. The discussions resulted in agreements covering the future direction and expansion of the collaboration.

As Tongyi strengthens its international presence, Lubrizol is expected to support the company through its global manufacturing network and supply chain infrastructure. The partners plan to establish a model combining global sourcing with regional manufacturing and distribution, with an emphasis on serving markets in Africa, the UAE and other regional destinations. The approach is intended to improve supply availability, shorten delivery times, lower logistics expenses and enhance overall supply chain flexibility.

The partnership will also deepen within China, where Lubrizol and Tongyi plan to jointly pursue opportunities with major OEMs and developing market channels. Rather than operating solely through a conventional supplier-customer relationship, the companies will collaborate throughout the customer development process. This will include identifying market requirements, defining product specifications, formulation and R&D, validation, and ongoing technical support.

Lubrizol will bring its expertise in additive technology, testing and technical services, while Tongyi will contribute its understanding of local markets, applications and customer requirements. This combined approach is expected to enable the partners to respond more effectively to changing lubricant requirements.

International product development will similarly focus on adapting solutions to individual market conditions instead of simply transferring existing products from one region to another. Areas under consideration include engine lubricants designed for alcohol-based fuels in the Americas, engine oils developed for biodiesel applications in regional markets, and motorcycle lubricants designed to meet specific Japanese Automotive Standards Organization requirements.

The companies are also broadening their cooperation into specialty industrial lubricants. Potential areas include screw compressor lubricants and heat transfer fluids, with product development centred on the requirements of individual equipment, operating environments and cost structures.

Through the expanded partnership, Lubrizol and Tongyi aim to establish a more integrated development platform covering market intelligence, product design, formulation, laboratory testing, validation, certification and field application.
