Nippon Yuka Kogyo Co., Ltd., a group company of Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha, has introduced a lubricating-oil analysis service specifically developed for ammonia-fuelled engines, supporting the maritime industry’s transition toward next-generation fuels.
Ammonia is increasingly recognised as a key alternative fuel for maritime decarbonisation due to its near-zero greenhouse gas emissions during combustion. As more ammonia-fuelled vessels enter operation, effective condition monitoring is becoming essential to ensure reliable engine performance and identify potential issues at an early stage.
Lubricating-oil analysis plays a critical role in this process, as the condition of the oil provides valuable insight into the internal health of an engine. By analysing lubricating oil, operators can detect abnormalities and potential failures before they develop into serious problems.
Following extensive verification trials, NYK and Nippon Yuka successfully developed and validated the specialised technical expertise required to provide lubricating-oil analysis services for ammonia-fuelled engines. Nippon Yuka will now extend these services across the NYK Group as well as to external customers.
NYK stated that it will continue advancing initiatives that support maritime decarbonisation and the adoption of next-generation fuels, including ammonia. The development also aligns with the growing deployment of ammonia-fuelled dual-fuel diesel engines that operate using both ammonia and conventional fuel oil.
