Infinium Breaks Ground on Major eFuels Facility in Texas to Accelerate SAF Production.

Infinium has begun construction on its second commercial-scale eFuels facility in the United States, dubbed Project Roadrunner, located in Reeves County near Pecos, Texas. Once operational, the plant is poised to become one of the world’s largest producers of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF).

The facility will produce approximately 23,000 tonnes annually of low-carbon eSAF and other eFuel products, using a combination of renewable energy and waste carbon dioxide. Major aviation customers already on board include American Airlines, IAG, Air France-KLM, and British Airways.

Robert Schuetzle, CEO of Infinium, emphasized that the project will bring economic benefits to the local community while reinforcing the U.S.’s position as a global leader in clean energy innovation and security.

eFuels are synthetic fuels created by combining captured CO₂ with renewable hydrogen, offering a low-carbon alternative compatible with existing engines and fuel infrastructure. Infinium is a front-runner in this field, having launched the world’s first commercial-scale eFuels plant in 2023.

Project Roadrunner is backed by Brookfield Asset Management and Breakthrough Energy Catalyst, and has secured 150 megawatts (MW) of wind power through a long-term agreement with NextEra Energy Resources.

The facility will use a 100-MW electrolyser system provided by Electric Hydrogen to produce green hydrogen, a key feedstock for eFuel synthesis.

Industry leaders have hailed the project as a breakthrough in scaling sustainable aviation fuel production. Jonathan Counsell, Group Sustainability Officer at IAG, described it as a “significant step” in decarbonizing air travel. Marcio Fonseca of Breakthrough Energy Catalyst highlighted its importance in turning emerging technologies into deployable infrastructure. Laura Helman, SVP at Brookfield, noted that the project supports their commitment to accelerating the energy transition.

Commercial agreements have been structured to attract institutional investment, ensuring long-term viability. The facility is expected to be fully operational in 2027.
