Shell Energy Italia and Infineum Italia Srl have entered into a multi-year agreement for the supply of biomethane and natural gas. This marks Shell Energy Italia’s first biomethane supply contract for end customers in Italy and represents one of the early agreements in the country aimed at advancing industrial decarbonisation.
Infineum Italia Srl, a specialty chemicals company engaged in the production and marketing of
lubricant additives, operates as a joint venture equally owned by ExxonMobil and Shell plc.
Scope of the Agreement
The contract includes the supply of up to 880 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of biomethane, sourced from production facilities across Italy. This supply is expected to help offset a portion of Infineum’s CO₂ emissions. The long-term nature of the agreement is designed to enhance cost predictability while ensuring a stable and secure energy supply.
Gianluca Formenti noted that the agreement strengthens the company’s strategy to expand its portfolio of long-term energy solutions, particularly for hard-to-abate sectors, while supporting customers in their energy transition journeys.
Marco Giorcelli added that the integration of biomethane at the Vado Ligure facility represents another step toward reducing the site’s overall carbon footprint.
Shell’s Presence in Italy
Shell plc has maintained a presence in Italy for over a century and currently serves more than 1,000 large industrial and commercial customers. Its offerings include energy management solutions such as natural gas, electricity, corporate power purchase agreements (CPPAs), and biomethane purchase agreements (BPAs).
