Honeywell and Repsol have announced a strategic partnership to accelerate the production of renewable fuels and circular materials. This collaboration will harness Honeywell’s advanced technologies to convert waste materials, including fats, oils, greases, biomass, and solids, into renewable fuels at Repsol’s refineries. This initiative supports both companies’ commitments to reducing carbon emissions and promoting sustainable energy solutions.
Honeywell’s technologies, such as its Ecofining™ process, will be scaled and commercialized at Repsol’s facilities to produce sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and renewable diesel. The companies are also exploring the use of Honeywell’s UpCycle Process Technology, which converts waste plastics into polymer feedstock for new plastics, potentially increasing plastic recycling rates to nearly 90%.
“As a global leader in sustainable fuel technologies, we seek collaborations that provide innovative solutions to help our customers and stakeholders reduce carbon and greenhouse gas emissions through biofuel production,” said Bryan Glover, chief growth officer and CTO of Honeywell Energy and Sustainability Solutions. “Our partnership with Repsol demonstrates how Honeywell can apply new technologies to reduce carbon emissions while producing biofuels and advanced materials using existing refinery infrastructure.”
“Renewable fuels and plastics recycling are essential to Repsol’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050,” said Berta Cabello, Repsol’s director of Renewable Fuels. “Our collaboration with Honeywell in advancing and adopting cutting-edge technologies will help reduce our carbon footprint and position us as a leader in renewable fuels and hydrogen production by 2030.”
Repsol, a global multi-energy company headquartered in Madrid, Spain, operates across the entire oil and gas value chain, from exploration and production to refining and marketing petroleum products and chemicals. It also has a significant presence in renewable energy as part of its goal to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.
Repsol operates six refineries—five in Spain and one in Peru—with a total refining capacity of over 1 million barrels per day. These refineries are located in:
Cartagena, Spain – Renowned for its advanced refining technologies
A Coruña, Spain – A key site in Repsol’s Spanish operations
Bilbao, Spain – Also known as the Petronor refinery
Puertollano, Spain – An integrated complex with petrochemical facilities
Tarragona, Spain – A major hub for refining and chemical production
La Pampilla, Peru – Repsol’s sole refinery outside Europe
This partnership builds on a history of successful collaboration between Honeywell and Repsol, including in licensing petrochemical units, digitalization, and technical support. The new venture is expected to significantly enhance Repsol’s renewable fuel production as it continues its journey toward achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.
