India’s leading automakers received a major boost after the GST Council cleared a 10% tax cut on small cars and commuter motorcycles, effective 22 September.
With earlier measures such as income-tax relief and lower interest rates failing to revive demand, the government is now banking on GST rationalisation to improve affordability for mass-market vehicles. The move is expected to ease pressure on millions of buyers, while higher levies on premium bikes and SUVs rebalance the tax structure.
The market reacted instantly—auto stocks surged in early trade, with the Nifty Auto index jumping 2.2% compared to a 0.8% rise in the benchmark Nifty. Shares of Maruti Suzuki rose 0.6%, Hyundai Motor India 1%, Hero MotoCorp 1.3%, and TVS Motor 1.7%.
Who Gains
Compact cars under four metres with engines below 1500cc (diesel) or 1200cc (petrol) will now attract an 18% GST without cess, down from the earlier 28% plus a 1–3% cess. Popular models like the Tata Altroz, Maruti Swift, Hyundai i10, i20, and Renault Kwid fall under this bracket.
Mass-market commuter motorcycles, including the Bajaj Pulsar and Hero Splendor, also shift to the 18% slab from the previous 28%.
With most small cars priced between ₹6–10 lakh, the GST cut could reduce prices by ₹60,000–1 lakh if fully passed on, though analysts warn that automakers and dealers may not transfer the entire benefit to buyers.
Who Pays More
Premium motorcycles above 350cc, such as Royal Enfield and Bajaj’s KTM models, will face a 40% GST rate compared to the earlier 28% plus 3% cess.
For mid- and large-size SUVs, GST has increased from 28% to 40% (with no cess), compared to the earlier effective rate of 45–50% after cess. This effectively reduces the tax burden by 5–10% for models like the Tata Harrier, Mahindra XUV700, Maruti Grand Vitara, and Hyundai Creta, potentially stimulating demand in the segment.
All electric vehicles, including the Tata Nexon EV, TVS iQube, Hyundai Creta EV, and Bajaj Chetak, remain at the concessional 5% GST rate.
Industry Response
Industry leaders and analysts welcomed the move as a timely measure to revive demand.
“This move makes tractors and farm machinery more affordable, reduces costs for commercial vehicles, and improves access to personal mobility. Together, it can stimulate demand and drive inclusive growth across the ecosystem,” said Rajesh Jejurikar, Executive Director & CEO – Auto & Farm Sector, Mahindra & Mahindra.
Maruti Suzuki Chairman RC Bhargava had earlier advocated for a cut, stating that reducing GST from 28% to 18% on small cars could provide a much-needed boost to affordability and demand in India’s largest auto segment.
“Affordability has been a challenge this year, with rising prices hurting entry-level demand. The GST cut to 18% on small cars offsets earlier price hikes and adds fresh value to the sub-4-metre segment,” said Gaurav Vangaal, Associate Director at S&P Global Mobility. He expects the festive season to benefit significantly from this measure.
Context: Demand on the Decline
The auto industry has been grappling with a slowdown. In April–June FY2026, passenger vehicle sales slipped 1.4% to 1.01 million units, two-wheeler sales fell 6.2% to 4.67 million, and commercial vehicle sales dipped 0.6% to 223,215 units, according to SIAM. Overall wholesale dispatches fell 5% year-on-year—the first such decline since FY2023.
Since Prime Minister Narendra Modi hinted at GST cuts during his Independence Day speech on 15 August, the Nifty Auto index has climbed nearly 7%, against a modest 0.3% rise in the benchmark Nifty.
