In a significant move, the government has unveiled scheme guidelines to bolster pilot projects focused on the utilization of green hydrogen as a fuel in buses, trucks, and four-wheelers. With a substantial budget of Rs 496 crore allocated until the financial year 2025-26, this initiative is set to revolutionize the transport sector. The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced the "Scheme Guidelines for Implementation of Pilot Projects for Use of Green Hydrogen in the Transport Sector" on February 14, 2024, under the National Green Hydrogen Mission.
As renewable energy costs decrease and electrolysers become more affordable, there's optimism that vehicles powered by green hydrogen will soon be cost-competitive. The MNRE anticipates that economies of scale and ongoing technological advancements will enhance the viability of green hydrogen-based transport in the coming years.Aligned with the National Green Hydrogen Mission, MNRE, in collaboration with the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways and scheme implementing agencies (SIAs), will spearhead pilot projects to replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen and its derivatives in the transport sector.
The initiative aims to support the development of cutting-edge technologies for utilizing green hydrogen as a fuel in buses, trucks, and four-wheelers, employing fuel cell-based and internal combustion engine-based propulsion technologies.Exciting times lie ahead as we witness the government's commitment to fostering sustainable and innovative solutions in the transportation landscape.
The Ministry of New & Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued "Scheme Guidelines for Implementation of Pilot Projects for Use of Green Hydrogen in the Steel Sector under the National Green Hydrogen Mission" on February 2, 2024. As part of this initiative, MNRE will oversee pilot projects in the steel sector to replace fossil fuels with green hydrogen and its derivatives, collaborating with the Ministry of Steel and implementing agencies.
Thriving in three key areas, these pilot projects target the use of hydrogen in the Direct Reduced Iron making process, the Blast Furnace, and a gradual shift from fossil fuels to green hydrogen. The scheme also supports innovative uses of hydrogen for reducing carbon emissions in iron and steel production.Highlighting the forward-looking approach, the guidelines emphasize that upcoming steel plants should be equipped to operate with green hydrogen, ensuring their readiness for future global low-carbon steel markets. Additionally, the scheme welcomes greenfield projects aspiring to achieve 100% green steel.
