General Motors (GM) has announced plans to discontinue development of next-generation hydrogen fuel cells under its HYDROTEC brand, as the company shifts its strategic focus toward electric vehicles (EVs), battery systems, and charging infrastructure.

While GM will no longer pursue new hydrogen fuel cell advancements, it will continue to manufacture existing fuel cells for data centers and stationary power generation through Fuel Cell System Manufacturing LLC, its joint venture with Honda.
Hydrogen fuel cells have demonstrated potential in heavy-duty applications such as backup power, mining, and long-haul trucking, but GM cited persistent economic and infrastructure constraints as major hurdles to widespread adoption. Currently, the United States has only 61 hydrogen refueling stations, compared to over 250,000 EV charging points, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.
“This decision reflects a strategic realignment toward technologies with the clearest commercial potential,” GM said in a statement. “We are sharpening our focus on solutions that offer the most scalable impact and customer value.”
The move highlights GM’s increasing confidence in the electric mobility ecosystem, as it continues to expand investment in battery innovation, charging networks, and vehicle electrification — all key to achieving its ambition of carbon neutrality by 2040.
