Daimler India Commercial Vehicles (DICV), the company behind BharatBenz trucks and buses, has taken on a central role in Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ newly established India, Southeast Asia and Australia-Pacific (ISEAA) customer region. The new regional structure was unveiled at IAA Transportation 2026 in Hanover, Germany, positioning India as the operational hub for a market spanning 42 countries and nearly 2.8 billion people.

The restructuring forms part of Mercedes-Benz Trucks’ updated global business model, which divides its international operations into four customer regions: Europe; Latin America, Middle East and Africa (LAMEA); China; and ISEAA. By bringing India, Southeast Asia and Australia-Pacific under one regional framework, Daimler Truck aims to strengthen coordination and capture growth opportunities across these markets. Vehicles will continue to be marketed under the BharatBenz name in India, while Mercedes-Benz Trucks will serve customers across Southeast Asia and Australia-Pacific. Demand for commercial vehicles across the newly combined region is expected to increase by more than 5% annually.

DICV’s manufacturing and export operations at Oragadam, near Chennai, provide the foundation for its new regional responsibilities. The company has exported more than 75,000 trucks and buses and over 330 million parts to more than 70 international markets since beginning operations. Its manufacturing capabilities also extend to supplying medium-duty transmissions to Daimler Truck production facilities in Germany. Torsten Schmidt currently leads DICV as CEO and Managing Director while also serving as President of the Mercedes-Benz Trucks Customer Region ISEAA.

Daimler Truck is further strengthening its Indian operations with a fresh investment of approximately INR 40 billion (USD 418 million) in Tamil Nadu. This takes the company’s cumulative investment in India beyond INR 145 billion (USD 1.51 billion). The new funding is expected to support higher production capacity as well as the expansion of research and development facilities and technology capabilities. DICV currently achieves around 92% localization, working with a supplier base of more than 400 companies in India.

The company is also focusing on adapting its products and technologies to the requirements of the Indian market. Its Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) are being calibrated specifically for Indian driving and road conditions in preparation for upcoming regulatory requirements. At the same time, Daimler Truck is expanding the availability of its Torqshift automated manual transmission across its vehicle portfolio, with the aim of improving driving comfort while helping operators reduce overall ownership costs.

BharatBenz is also planning a significant expansion of its customer support infrastructure. The company intends to increase its network from approximately 430 touchpoints to 600 by 2030, with particular attention to underserved markets in northern, eastern and north-eastern India. These efforts will be complemented by the Rakshana service assurance programme and TruckConnect, the company’s digital fleet management platform.

With India serving as the anchor for the ISEAA region, Daimler Truck is seeking to build on DICV’s manufacturing, engineering and export capabilities while creating a more integrated platform for growth across some of the world’s expanding commercial vehicle markets.
