Cerilon GTL ND Inc. has reached a major milestone in the development of its planned gas-to-liquids (GTL) facility in Williams County, North Dakota, by finalising a single-point technology licensing framework with Topsoe and Sasol South Africa Ltd. The agreement covers the hydrogen production, gas reforming, and Fischer-Tropsch conversion technologies that will form the core of the project.

The agreement covers the hydrogen production, gas reforming, and Fischer-Tropsch conversion technologies that will form the core of the project.
According to Cerilon, negotiations for all definitive technology licensing agreements have been completed, with formal execution expected once project financing is secured. The integrated licensing structure combines Topsoe's SynCOR synthesis gas (syngas) technology with Sasol's Low-Temperature Fischer-Tropsch (LTFT) technology, providing a streamlined approach to producing high-quality synthetic fuels and specialty products.
Cerilon Chief Executive Officer Nico Duursema described the agreement as a significant step toward advancing the company's flagship GTL project. He said the partnership brings together decades of expertise in hydrogen production, gas reforming, and Fischer-Tropsch technology, strengthening both the technical and commercial foundation of the North Dakota facility. Duursema also noted that integrating carbon capture technology alongside these proven process technologies will enable the plant to produce premium fuels and base oils with a lower environmental footprint.
Once operational, the GTL facility will convert natural gas into a range of high-value synthetic products, including Group III base oils, ultra-low sulphur diesel, and naphtha. Cerilon intends to use the North Dakota project as the first in a series of GTL facilities, with plans to replicate the model at additional locations worldwide.
The company has already selected the project site in North Dakota and secured key regulatory approvals for a two-facility development that will leverage existing regional infrastructure.
Representatives from both technology partners welcomed the agreement. Henrik Rasmussen, Managing Director of Topsoe Americas, said the collaboration demonstrates the value of combining Topsoe's SynCOR technology with Sasol's Fischer-Tropsch expertise under a single licensing structure and highlighted the project's potential economic impact on the local community.
Sarushen Pillay, Executive Vice President for Business Building, Strategy and Technology at Sasol, added that the company's proven Fischer-Tropsch technology is expected to reduce project risk, improve product yields, and enhance the overall bankability of the development.
