22 Oct 2025

Airbus and the Cathay Group have entered into a co-investment partnership valued at up to USD 70 million to accelerate the development and production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across Asia and globally.

Airbus and the Cathay Group have entered into a co-investment partnership valued at up to USD 70 million to accelerate the development and production of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) across Asia and globally.

The announcement was made in Hong Kong on 21 October 2025 during the IATA World Sustainability Symposium, where Alex McGowan, Cathay’s Chief Operations and Service Delivery Officer, and Anand Stanley, Airbus President for Asia-Pacific, jointly unveiled the agreement.

Under the partnership, the two companies will identify, evaluate, and invest in SAF projects through 2030 and beyond, focusing on initiatives that demonstrate strong commercial potential, proven technology readiness, and long-term offtake viability.

McGowan described SAF as the most vital enabler for decarbonising aviation, emphasizing that the collaboration aligns with Cathay’s broader commitment to future fuel investments and builds on its involvement in initiatives like the oneworld BEV SAF Fund.

Stanley noted that cross-sector partnerships are essential to making SAF production scalable and affordable, calling the alliance a clear example of Airbus’s commitment to advancing SAF availability in key regions to support airline customers.

The agreement also includes a joint advocacy effort to promote supportive SAF policy frameworks across Asia, tackling both supply-side and demand-side challenges. With its abundant feedstock potential, emerging production infrastructure, and dynamic aviation market, Asia is viewed as a critical region for SAF growth.

Airbus and Cathay share a longstanding partnership dating back to 1989. Today, the Cathay Group operates 86 Airbus aircraft, with over 70 additional planes on order for future delivery, underscoring the deepening collaboration between the two companies in advancing sustainable aviation.
