Castrol has unveiled a new line of marine lubricants—Castrol MHP—specifically designed for the latest generation of four-stroke medium-speed engines that operate on distillate fuels and alternative energy sources. The range, which includes MHP 1-30 and MHP 1-40, features a lower base number and a unique formulation tailored to address the changing demands of vessel operators adapting to increasingly diverse fuel types and advanced engine technologies.
Engineered to deliver exceptional protection and cleanliness, the lubricants have undergone over 30,000 hours of in-house testing. Both variants contain carefully selected detergents that ensure excellent thermal and oxidation stability and are compatible with fuels like LNG, distillates, and biofuels.
In field trials with a leading tugboat operator using an 835 biofuel blend, Castrol MHP demonstrated the potential to extend oil drain intervals up to 1,000 hours. Used oil analysis confirmed superior oxidation resistance and wear protection, with critical parameters such as viscosity and base number remaining within ideal operational limits.
Eda Gökay, Castrol’s Global Marine and Energy Marketing Manager, highlighted the growing complexity of managing engine health as the marine sector transitions to low-carbon and dual-fuel propulsion systems. She emphasized that advanced lubricants like the new MHP range are essential to ensure reliable engine performance in this evolving landscape.
“New engine technologies and fuels are transforming the shipping industry, making engine maintenance more challenging. Our MHP range is designed to help operators navigate this complexity with confidence while maximizing the benefits of emerging technologies,” she said.
The Castrol MHP range was first launched in Singapore in June, with availability in major European ports beginning August. These lubricants meet API CF standards and have received OEM approvals from manufacturers such as Wärtsilä and MAK for use in dual-fuel engines running on distillates or LNG.
Beyond ensuring long-term engine reliability, the new formulation also enhances Castrol’s global supply chain agility and broadens its marine diesel lubricant offering.
