BioTrans GB marine lubricant is introduced by Castrol

4 Dec 2025

Castrol has introduced BioTrans GB, an environmentally acceptable lubricant developed for marine thrusters, selected controllable pitch propeller systems, and deck machinery. The product complies with the U.S. Vessel Incidental Discharge Act (VIDA) and meets the biodegradability, toxicity, and bioaccumulation criteria set out in the 2013 Vessel General Permit (VGP).

BioTrans GB is a synthetic ester–based gear oil formulated to deliver strong extreme-pressure performance, corrosion protection, and thermal and hydrolytic stability. According to Castrol, the lubricant is designed to perform reliably under demanding operating conditions, with a temperature operating range from –25°C to 100°C, and can tolerate seawater ingress without rapid loss of performance. It is also compatible with commonly used elastomers, including Nitrile and FKM.

Eda Gökay, Global Marine and Energy Marketing Manager at Castrol, said the new product helps customers navigate increasingly complex operational and regulatory demands while providing extended performance for critical marine equipment. Kat Colvin, Senior Environmental Toxicologist at Castrol, added that the formulation reflects the company’s commitment to meeting tightening global environmental regulations while delivering solutions that maintain operational reliability.

Castrol noted that BioTrans GB is fully miscible with Castrol BioStat, although mixing the two may affect demulsifying performance. The company also stated that the lubricant has been tested and approved by several major thruster manufacturers.
