The American Petroleum Institute (API) has introduced early submission procedures for products that meet the new ILSAC GF-7 standards, marking a significant step for the automotive lubrication sector.

The American Petroleum Institute (API) has introduced early submission procedures for products that meet the new ILSAC GF-7 standards, marking a significant step for the automotive lubrication sector.

Starting January 13, 2025, marketers can begin submitting formulations that comply with the updated standards, with official licensing beginning on March 31, 2025.

Products meeting ILSAC GF-7A will be eligible to display the API Certification Mark "Starburst," while those meeting ILSAC GF-7B will carry the "Shield" mark. Oils that qualify for the API Service SQ will feature this designation on the upper portion of the API Service Symbol "Donut," with Resource Conserving oils receiving an additional label at the bottom.

Key Information for Marketers:
  • Early Submission: Marketers can now submit formulations through API’s online application system ahead of the licensing start date.

  • Streamlined Process: Existing API SP products with matching viscosity grades can take advantage of the new system to avoid submitting duplicate formulations.

  • Formulation Sharing: Formulations meeting the ILSAC GF-7 standards can be shared between companies under specific conditions.

  • Dual Licensing Period: From March 31, 2025, to March 31, 2026, products can be licensed under both the ILSAC GF-6 and GF-7 standards, facilitating a smooth transition. However, marketers are reminded not to imply certification or use the marks before the official licensing begins.

API’s updates aim to meet the growing need for engine oils that comply with higher environmental and performance standards. For more information, marketers are encouraged to reach out to the API Lubricants Standards Group.
