With Beyond, Valvoline enters the data-center cooling fluid market

Valvoline Global Operations has introduced Beyond by Valvoline, a new thermal management fluid platform designed for data centres, utility-scale battery energy storage systems, and other high heat-load applications. The launch marks a strategic expansion for the 160-year-old lubricant company beyond its traditional engine oil business into advanced cooling solutions.

The new platform is engineered to meet the growing demand for liquid cooling technologies, which are rapidly replacing conventional air cooling in data centres. The increasing adoption of artificial intelligence (AI) and high-performance computing (HPC) has significantly raised processor heat output, making efficient thermal management essential for maintaining system reliability and performance.

Valvoline stated that the Beyond platform leverages its long-standing expertise in heat-transfer technologies to address the thermal challenges of next-generation computing infrastructure. As computing systems continue to become more powerful and densely packed, effective cooling is emerging as a key enabler of operational efficiency.

The launch aligns with a broader industry trend toward liquid cooling. According to market research from Dell'Oro Group, the global data centre liquid cooling market is expected to reach approximately USD 15 billion over the next five years. Technologies such as direct-to-chip and immersion cooling are gaining momentum, creating new opportunities for lubricant and thermal management companies to develop specialised cooling fluids.

Commenting on the launch, Roger England, Chief Technical Officer at Valvoline Global, highlighted that heat management is fundamental across multiple industries. He noted that the same engineering expertise used to optimise engine performance is now being applied to support both current and future computing technologies.

Valvoline Global Operations became part of Saudi Aramco following its USD 2.65 billion acquisition in March 2023. The products business, headquartered in Lexington, Kentucky, operates independently from Valvoline Inc.'s retail services division. With Aramco's strong position as one of the world's leading base oil producers, the acquisition strengthens vertical integration across the fuels and lubricants value chain. Today, Valvoline Global serves customers in over 140 countries through a distribution network of more than 80,000 locations.
