TotalEnergies and SSE have announced a joint venture to establish a new entity called ‘Source,’ focused on developing a robust electric vehicle (EV) charging network across the UK and Ireland.
SSE, previously known as Scottish and Southern Energy, is one of the largest energy companies in the United Kingdom.
Source aims to install up to 3,000 high-power charge points within the next five years, situated in 300 EV hubs. These hubs will be strategically located in urban areas to address the increasing demand for fast and reliable EV charging solutions. The initiative seeks to capture a 20% market share, providing essential infrastructure to support the rising number of EVs, driven by the UK’s 2035 mandate for zero vehicle emissions and Ireland’s goal of one million electric vehicles by 2030.
The charge points will be powered by renewable energy from SSE and TotalEnergies, highlighting their commitment to sustainable energy solutions. This venture aligns with TotalEnergies’ broader strategy to expand its network of high-power charging sites across Europe, complementing its existing 64,000 charge points worldwide.
Neil Kirkby, Managing Director of Enterprise at SSE, emphasized the venture’s importance in accelerating the decarbonization of transport, supporting SSE’s extensive efforts in renewable energy and electricity network transformation. The partnership reflects a shared vision for a cleaner and more efficient transportation system.
This collaboration is set to deliver several benefits, including increased consumer confidence in EV infrastructure, reduced carbon emissions, and support for the broader objectives of energy transition and sustainability in the UK and Ireland.
