Hyundai Motor Group Unveils Waste-to-Hydrogen Initiative in Indonesia’s West Java Province
SEOUL/JAKARTA, April 15, 2025 – Hyundai Motor Group (the Group) announced detailed action plans to develop a waste-to-hydrogen (W2H) ecosystem in West Java Province, Indonesia, during the Global Hydrogen Ecosystem Summit held in Jakarta.
The initiative is being pursued in collaboration with Indonesia’s Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS), and state-owned energy company PT Pertamina (Persero).
Hosted by the Indonesia Fuel Cell & Hydrogen Energy Association (IFHE), the summit gathered key stakeholders including ESDM, BAPPENAS, Pertamina, and Hyundai Motor Group executives. ESDM presented Indonesia’s national hydrogen roadmap, while BAPPENAS introduced hydrogen policies related to Nusantara, Indonesia’s upcoming capital city.
As part of the project, Hyundai Motor Group will build an on-site hydrogen refueling station, leveraging Pertamina’s existing compressed natural gas (CNG) infrastructure. The station is expected to begin operations by 2027 and will be fueled by low-carbon hydrogen produced from biogas generated at the Sarimukti landfill near Bandung, the capital of West Java Province.
Following the successful completion of a technical feasibility study on the Sarimukti landfill, construction is scheduled to begin this year. The Group will also introduce Korea’s advanced hydrogen technologies and regulatory expertise through a consortium of leading Korean organizations.
This roadmap represents a major milestone in Hyundai Motor Group’s commitment to clean energy innovation and supports the broader objectives of Indonesia’s national hydrogen strategy. The initiative aligns with both national development goals and the recently introduced National Hydrogen and Ammonia Roadmap.
