The American Petroleum Institute (API) has already licensed more than 1,800 engine oils under the new ILSAC GF-7 standard since its launch on March 31, 2025—demonstrating rapid industry adoption of the latest gasoline engine oil specification.
Of these, over 1,750 products have been certified under the GF-7A category, which is backward-compatible for use where GF-6A or earlier specifications are required. In addition, around 125 formulations have been approved under GF-7B, specifically for SAE 0W-16 viscosity grade oils, suitable for applications that call for GF-6B equivalents.
Developed by API in collaboration with industry stakeholders, ILSAC GF-7A and GF-7B mark the next generation of passenger car engine oil performance standards, addressing evolving engine technologies. While GF-7A covers a broad range of applications, GF-7B focuses on ultra-low-viscosity oils designed to improve efficiency and lower emissions.
API has also expanded licensing under its Service Category SP to more than 2,500 products, including emerging ultra-low-viscosity grades such as SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12. These formulations are increasingly specified by global automakers for their friction-reducing and fuel-saving benefits, with the new standard streamlining adoption for North American manufacturers.
To support this transition, API has updated its Motor Oil Guide, providing consumers, service professionals, and industry stakeholders with a comprehensive resource to identify oils that meet both manufacturer and industry requirements.
