Repsol, Toyota, BMW and Bosch Put Renewable Gasoline to the Test in Spain

Repsol, Toyota Motor Europe (TME), BMW Group and Bosch have launched a joint demonstration project in Spain to examine the potential of 100% renewable gasoline as a practical option for reducing emissions from road transport.

The six-month trial, which started in July 2026, brings together a fleet of approximately 20 Toyota and BMW vehicles. The vehicles are being fuelled exclusively with Repsol’s Nexa 95 renewable gasoline, while Bosch provides its Digital Fuel Twin technology to digitally track and verify fuel consumption.

Rather than introducing new vehicle technology or building a separate refuelling network, the project is designed around infrastructure that is already available. The partners aim to show that renewable gasoline can be used in compatible vehicles today, offering a potential pathway to reduce transport emissions without requiring an immediate replacement of the existing vehicle fleet.

Three Key Areas of the Demonstration

The project is focused on assessing three important aspects of renewable gasoline adoption:

1. Real-world fuel availabilityThe trial will demonstrate the practical availability of 100% renewable gasoline through Repsol’s public fuel station network in Spain.

2. Digital traceabilityBosch’s Digital Fuel Twin will be used to record and verify renewable fuel consumption, providing digital visibility across the fuel’s lifecycle and helping establish reliable certification and traceability.

3. Fleet-level operationToyota and BMW vehicles will be operated under everyday conditions to assess the practicality of using renewable gasoline in existing passenger vehicles without requiring significant changes to the current infrastructure.

BMW Group sees the project as an opportunity to collect real-world operating data from BMW and MINI vehicles. The information gathered could contribute to the development of more efficient and environmentally responsible powertrain solutions while supporting a technology-neutral approach to future mobility.

Bosch is focusing on the digital side of the initiative. Its Digital Fuel Twin system is intended to provide a transparent record of renewable fuel movement and consumption, from its introduction into the market through to its use by individual vehicles. Such data could play an important role in establishing confidence, supporting certification and meeting regulatory requirements as renewable fuels become more widely adopted.

A key advantage of the demonstration is that it does not depend on the development of new vehicles or major infrastructure upgrades. Toyota España is providing Toyota and Lexus passenger vehicles, while BMW is contributing fleet vehicles for the trial. By using existing cars and conventional refuelling infrastructure, the companies are examining the potential of renewable gasoline as a drop-in solution for reducing emissions from vehicles already on the road.

Repsol’s Nexa 95 is produced using feedstocks that meet the requirements of the EU Renewable Energy Directive. The renewable gasoline is designed to provide lower greenhouse-gas emissions than conventional fossil-based gasoline while remaining suitable for existing gasoline engines and fuel distribution systems.

Spain provides a suitable environment for the demonstration due to the availability of renewable gasoline, established fuel infrastructure and close cooperation between the participating companies. Toyota España is also supporting the project operationally.

By combining renewable fuel production, vehicle testing and digital fuel certification, the initiative seeks to demonstrate how different technologies can work together to accelerate the decarbonisation of road transport. The findings from the six-month trial could provide valuable insight into the potential for renewable gasoline to complement electrification and other low-carbon mobility solutions.
