India has witnessed a remarkable transformation in its renewable energy landscape, registering a threefold increase in installed renewable power capacity over the past ten years. As of May 2025, the nation’s total renewable energy capacity has surged to 232 GW, up from 75.5 GW in March 2014, according to data from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy.
This rapid expansion has been driven primarily by solar and wind power projects. Solar capacity alone has seen exponential growth, while wind energy has also seen substantial additions. Alongside these, biomass, small hydro, and other clean sources have steadily contributed to the growth trajectory.
The ministry highlighted that in the financial year 2023–24, India achieved a record-breaking addition of 25 GW of renewable energy capacity—its highest ever annual increase. This brings India closer to its ambitious target of 500 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.
The progress in clean energy deployment not only strengthens India’s energy security but also underscores its commitment to climate goals, supporting the global transition to a low-carbon economy.
