Shell Indonesia has introduced a new range of transformer fluids under the Shell MIDEL brand, expanding its portfolio with ester-based insulating liquids for the country’s power sector. The products are designed for both industrial and utility applications, including power and distribution transformers, as well as equipment used in renewable energy, rail, mining, and other industries.
According to the company, the new fluids offer enhanced fire safety, strong performance, and improved biodegradability. They are particularly suited for installations in densely populated areas and critical infrastructure, where higher safety standards and environmental protection are essential.
The launch strengthens Shell’s existing transformer oil portfolio, which already includes natural and synthetic ester products along with GTL-based Shell Diala fluids. Shell MIDEL fluids are classified as readily biodegradable under OECD 301 testing and are considered non-hazardous under CLP/GHS guidelines. With fire points exceeding 300°C and certifications from FM Global and UL, the products fall under the K-class category for fire safety.
Andri Pratiwa, Managing Director – Lubricants at Shell Indonesia, said the company remains focused on safety, performance, and sustainability, and expects demand for advanced transformer fluids to grow as Indonesia’s power infrastructure continues to expand.
Farista A. Kusuma, Vice President – Technical Lubricants at Shell Indonesia, noted that the new fluids provide clear advantages over conventional transformer oils, particularly in terms of fire protection and environmental performance.
Shell also highlighted that the ester-based formulation improves moisture tolerance, helps extend the life of cellulose insulation, and enhances overall operational reliability. Backed by Shell’s global supply chain, the fluids will be available internationally. Shell acquired the MIDEL brand in 2023, and MIDEL 7131—part of the portfolio—has been in service since 1978.
