Renault Group has become the first automotive manufacturer to launch and exclusively offer a complete range of premium engine oils formulated with re-refined base oils (RRBO), reinforcing its efforts to lower the carbon footprint of its after-sales portfolio.
The automaker said the new co-branded Renault–Castrol GTX range will initially be introduced with the RN17 5W-30 specification, which is applicable to more than half of Renault Group vehicles currently in operation across Europe. By 2026, the company plans to extend the use of re-refined base oils to all engine oil formulations for its models.
Renault Group said the incorporation of re-refined base oils cuts the carbon footprint of the RN17 oil by around 15% compared with conventional formulations. Across the wider product range, overall carbon reductions are estimated at between 13% and 24%, based on cradle-to-gate lifecycle assessments. The company added that the oils fully meet its technical standards, delivering the required engine performance and protection while preserving warranty coverage.
François Delion, vice president of global after-sales at Renault Group, said the move demonstrates that lower-carbon lubricant solutions can be implemented without sacrificing quality or performance throughout a vehicle’s lifecycle.
Castrol, which co-developed the lubricants with Renault Group, said the partnership supports broader efforts to promote circularity within the automotive industry.
The RN17 oil is now available through Renault Group’s dealer network across Europe. Additional specifications, including RN720 and AN2022, are scheduled for rollout by 2026, completing the portfolio.
Renault Group’s RN and AN engine oil specifications define performance requirements for its modern petrol, diesel and electrified powertrains. RN17 is a low-SAPS specification typically associated with SAE 5W-30 oils and is widely used across the company’s European fleet, delivering improved fuel economy while protecting gasoline and diesel particulate filters.
RN720 is a newer ultra-low-viscosity specification commonly linked to SAE 0W-20 oils, designed for the latest high-efficiency petrol and hybrid engines where reduced friction and lower CO₂ emissions are critical. AN2022 is a next-generation approval developed for newer engine architectures and electrified applications, covering low-viscosity grades such as SAE 0W-20 and SAE 0W-30, and engineered to withstand frequent start-stop operation, higher thermal stress and extended durability demands while remaining compatible with modern emissions control systems.
