Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. has made an investment in ATOM-x Inc. through its Corporate Venture Capital Group to support the development and commercialisation of ATOM-X’s innovative e-methanol technology.

The investment, announced on 8 May 2026, will enable both companies to collaborate on scaling up ATOM-X’s e-methanol production technology and accelerating its path to commercial deployment. Financial details of the transaction were not disclosed.

ATOM-X has developed a proprietary catalyst-based process that produces cost-competitive e-methanol through a single-step electro-synthesis method. The technology directly converts water and carbon dioxide (CO₂) into e-methanol under ambient temperature and pressure conditions, eliminating the need for the complex, high-temperature and high-pressure processes typically required in conventional e-methanol production.

E-methanol is increasingly being recognised as a promising low-carbon fuel for marine transportation and can also be used in the production of jet fuel, gasoline, and chemical feedstocks. Idemitsu stated that affordable e-methanol is strategically important for its future business portfolio and is expected to play a significant role in decarbonisation efforts across multiple industries.

The company added that it plans to explore both technical and commercial collaboration opportunities with ATOM-X while accelerating efforts toward the wider adoption and social implementation of e-methanol technologies.

Headquartered in Tokyo, Idemitsu invests in innovative low-carbon energy solutions and advanced material technologies through its Corporate Venture Capital Group, supporting the transition toward a sustainable, carbon-neutral, and circular society.

ATOM-x Inc. is based in Somerville and operates from Greentown Labs. Founded in 2024, the startup focuses on advanced electrochemical technologies for producing green methanol as a cleaner and more economical alternative to fossil-derived methanol. By eliminating conventional multi-step production methods, ATOM-X’s technology helps reduce production costs and greenhouse gas emissions while offering a scalable solution for renewable methanol applications in marine shipping and industrial chemicals.
