Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, inaugurated India’s largest solar cell gigafactory, a 5.4 GW advanced manufacturing facility by Waaree Energy, in Chikhli, Gujarat. The event was attended by key dignitaries, including Union Minister for Jal Shakti Shri C. R. Patil, Gujarat Chief Minister Shri Bhupendrabhai Patel, and senior state officials.

A Landmark Achievement in India's Renewable Energy Growth

Calling it a historic milestone, Shri Joshi highlighted India’s remarkable progress in solar energy, noting that the country’s installed solar power capacity has surged from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 104 GW in 2025—a 3,580% increase. He credited Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership for positioning India as a global leader in renewable energy, now ranking third in the world for installed capacity.

Boosting Domestic Solar Manufacturing and Exports

The new gigafactory is set to strengthen India's solar supply chain and enhance exports of advanced solar technologies. Shri Joshi pointed out that:

  • Solar module production has increased to 80 GW.

  • Solar cell manufacturing now stands at 25 GW.

With new government sourcing policies for solar PV modules, production is expected to grow significantly by 2030, further reinforcing India’s commitment to renewable energy expansion.
