LEXINGTON, Ky., March 31, 2025 /PRNewswire/ — Valvoline™ Global Operations, a leader in automotive and industrial lubricants, has introduced its newly formulated passenger car motor oils for the U.S. and Canadian markets. These new products surpass the latest ILSAC GF-7 standards, which officially take effect today.
Valvoline has consistently played a key role in shaping engine oil standards, and their current ILSAC GF-6 certified synthetic motor oils already meet the stricter GF-7 criteria. This reflects the company's ongoing commitment to staying ahead of evolving performance requirements and helping drive progress in mobility.
Notably, Valvoline is the only major lubricant brand with a cutting-edge engine testing lab—located in Ashland, Kentucky—that contributes directly to the development of ILSAC standards. The facility allows Valvoline to conduct vital engine sequence testing that helps establish industry benchmarks every five to seven years. Thanks to this expertise, Valvoline's new formulations are designed to support modern engines and extend vehicle longevity.
“Our engines are working harder than ever to keep pace with the demands of everyday life,” said Dr. Michael Warholic, Senior Global Technology Director at Valvoline. “These advanced GF-7 oils not only meet but exceed expectations, offering better protection and performance today while preparing for tomorrow’s needs.”
Valvoline’s GF-7-compliant synthetic oils are designed to defend against wear, friction, heat, and deposits—four leading causes of engine failure. In a standout test, the company’s full synthetic GF-7 oil ran in a single engine for over 500,000 miles across three years without requiring the replacement of key components, significantly outperforming GF-6 standards in terms of cleanliness and durability.
The GF-7 specification continues the "A" and "B" designations introduced with GF-6 in 2020. GF-7A applies to SAE 0W-20 and heavier oils and is backward-compatible with all prior GF standards. GF-7B covers SAE 0W-16 oils and is only backward-compatible with GF-6B.
As GF-6 oils are phased out starting March 31, 2025, Valvoline's new GF-7A oils will carry the API “Starburst” label, while GF-7B oils will feature the API “Shield.” API SP oils will have an updated “Donut” symbol displaying the SP grade.
Dr. Warholic added, “Our team’s relentless innovation and leadership continue to drive engine oil performance forward, shaping industry standards for the benefit of drivers everywhere.”
