Sines was chosen for its strategic industrial location, modern infrastructure, deep-water port, strong logistics network, and access to renewable energy. Together, these advantages provide an ideal environment for large-scale chemical manufacturing while supporting Europe’s goals of improving supply security, reducing carbon emissions, and building a more competitive and sustainable chemical industry.

The facility will produce butanol, hexanol, and octanol from bioethanol, providing renewable alternatives to chemicals traditionally manufactured from fossil-based feedstocks. The products will maintain the same chemical properties and can be used within existing industrial processes, allowing customers to reduce their carbon footprint without major changes to infrastructure or applications.

The project’s Project of National Interest status recognizes its potential contribution to Portugal’s industrial growth, technological development, sustainability, and economic progress. The designation also supports a faster regulatory process. Catalyxx has already obtained the required key environmental approvals, bringing the project closer to the construction stage.

The Sines facility builds on the technology and operational experience developed at Catalyxx’s demonstration plant in Sevilla, Spain. Continuous operation at the demonstration facility has enabled the company to validate its proprietary catalytic process, collect extensive technical data, and develop the expertise required to move toward commercial-scale production.

With this experience as its foundation, Catalyxx Ibérica is expected to become an important platform for the company’s international expansion across renewable chemicals and low-carbon fuels.

The project is now in its final development phase, with construction expected to commence in Q4 2026. Engineering and project development are being supported by Worley and Quadrante, combining expertise in energy, chemicals, engineering, architecture, environmental management, and sustainability.

Catalyxx Ibérica is supported through a combination of private capital and public funding. Among the project’s key milestones is €20 million in funding from the Circular Bio-based Europe Joint Undertaking (CBE JU). The funding further highlights the project’s strategic relevance to Europe’s ambitions for industrial decarbonization, sustainable production, and stronger supply chains.

The development is also expected to create broader economic opportunities in Portugal by attracting additional investment and encouraging the emergence of new sustainable industrial value chains. Once operational, the Sines facility is expected to avoid approximately 105,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually.

According to Joaquín Alarcón, CEO of Catalyxx, the project represents an important step toward replacing fossil-derived chemicals with renewable alternatives that can deliver comparable performance while significantly reducing carbon intensity. He also emphasized the company’s appreciation for the support provided by Portuguese national, regional, and local authorities throughout the project’s development.

The Sines project represents Catalyxx’s transition from technology demonstration to commercial-scale manufacturing. By combining renewable feedstocks, established industrial infrastructure, and proprietary catalytic technology, the company aims to contribute to the transformation of the chemical industry and accelerate the adoption of lower-carbon alternatives worldwide.
