Honda Expands Vithalapur Plant to Become World’s Largest Motorcycle Manufacturing Facility

Honda Motorcycle & Scooter India Pvt. Ltd. (HMSI), the Indian subsidiary of Honda’s global two-wheeler business, is set to significantly expand its production capacity with the addition of a fourth assembly line at its Vithalapur facility in Gujarat. Scheduled for completion in 2027, the new line will add 650,000 units to the plant’s annual output, raising its total capacity to 2.61 million units per year. The expansion is expected to create approximately 1,800 new jobs.

With this development, the Vithalapur site will become Honda’s largest motorcycle manufacturing plant globally.

HMSI is investing around INR 9.2 billion (USD 108 million) in the project, which primarily aims to boost the production of 125cc-class motorcycles. This segment, part of the globally dominant sub-150cc category, represents about 60% of the total motorcycle market. In key emerging markets such as India, Indonesia, Vietnam, and the Philippines, motorcycles between 100cc and 125cc continue to lead in volume and popularity.

Currently, HMSI operates four manufacturing plants across India, with a total annual production capacity of 6.14 million units. Once the new line is operational, this figure will approach 7 million. Since starting operations in 2001, HMSI has produced over 70 million two-wheelers—a milestone it achieved in April 2025. The Vithalapur plant itself has seen steady growth, with its third assembly line launched in January 2024.

This capacity expansion comes as Honda consolidates its leadership in the global motorcycle market. Industry data shows that global motorcycle production reached a record 61.8 million units in 2024, with Honda contributing 19.6 million units—an industry-leading market share of 31.7%. India has been a critical growth engine, with Honda’s two-wheeler sales in the country rising by 30.5% in 2024.

Tsutsumu Otani, President and CEO of HMSI, reaffirmed the company’s long-term commitment to India. He stated that the investment reflects Honda’s ambition to meet the evolving needs of Indian consumers with reliable, innovative mobility solutions.
