Castrol Unveils SmartCoolant: Automated System for Optimised Metalworking Fluid Performance
Castrol has introduced SmartCoolant, an automated coolant management system designed to optimise metalworking fluid performance in real time. The technology will be highlighted at EMO Hannover 2025, the premier global production technology trade fair, held from 22–26 September.
SmartCoolant provides real-time monitoring and automatic refilling of coolants, maintaining critical parameters such as concentration, pH, temperature, and conductivity. According to Castrol, the system lowers operational costs, enhances process transparency, and delivers laboratory-quality readings within seconds.
Following successful trials, manufacturers reported improved efficiency and cost savings, with some expecting a rapid return on investment.
Cassandra Higham, Industrial Director at Castrol, noted that automation will be key to sustaining Europe’s industrial competitiveness, particularly in the face of labour shortages and rising operational costs.
Part of Castrol’s Intelligent Lubrication Solutions portfolio, SmartCoolant facilitates Industry 4.0 adoption by providing manufacturers with access to real-time data through an online portal. The system is compatible with mineral oil, ester-based, and synthetic water-miscible coolants and can be used in both centralised systems and standalone machines.
