This development would mark Tesla’s first major move in India beyond its passenger electric vehicle business, which only began operations in the country in August last year. Its Megapack systems—designed for large-scale energy storage applications—are already deployed across the United States and other global markets.
As per Reuters, entering the Indian market would place Tesla in direct competition with major domestic players such as Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, and the Adani Group, headed by Gautam Adani, both of which have outlined plans in the energy storage space.
India has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 GW of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, up from over 262 GW recorded at the end of 2025. Meeting this goal will require substantial investment in energy storage infrastructure to balance supply during off-peak periods, enhance grid stability, and support the country’s broader decarbonisation objectives. To facilitate this transition, the government is offering financial incentives and working on a national roadmap to guide industry participation.
