The American Petroleum Institute (API) has officially approved new gasoline engine oil standards: ILSAC GF-7A, GF-7B, and API SQ. These next-generation specifications are designed to enhance fuel efficiency, provide superior engine protection, and reduce emissions, addressing the evolving needs of modern vehicles and regulatory demands.

The new standards will come into effect on March 31, 2025, as part of API’s Engine Oil Licensing and Certification System. Oils certified under ILSAC GF-7A will feature the API “Starburst” Certification Mark, while GF-7B oils will display the API “Shield” to ensure correct application in recommended uses.

Targeted at 2026 model-year vehicles and beyond, the ILSAC GF-7 standard introduces ultra-low-viscosity grades such as SAE 0W-8 and SAE 0W-12, optimized for advanced engine designs. The API SQ standard complements this with performance criteria for both “Resource Conserving” and non-conserving oils.

“API has worked closely with ILSAC and industry stakeholders to develop these new oil standards, which are designed to meet the demands of future engine technologies and upcoming regulatory requirements,” said Bill O’Ryan, senior manager of EOLCS/DEF at API. “These oils represent a significant step forward in improving fuel efficiency, engine protection, and emissions reduction.”

Since 1919, API has been a global leader in energy standards, representing more than 600 members while driving safe, sustainable practices in the industry.
