Saudi Arabia-based Alfanar Group is preparing to enter India's green hydrogen market, contingent upon the finalization of the country's policy and regulatory framework. Mohammed Irfan, CEO of Alfanar Global Development - India, emphasized that the company is poised to leverage its international expertise, particularly from Egypt and Chile, to replicate successful models in India once assured offtake agreements are in place.
Currently, Alfanar operates 506.5 MW of wind power capacity in Gujarat, with an additional 50 MW under construction. The company is focusing on a combination of wind and solar hybrid projects, along with energy storage solutions.
Irfan noted that while there is growing interest in green hydrogen, India still lacks guaranteed offtake agreements. He highlighted that India's renewable sector benefits from long-term Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs) with entities like NTPC and SECI.
In addition to its activities in India, Alfanar is developing green hydrogen projects in Egypt and green ammonia projects in Chile. The company has a global renewable energy portfolio of approximately 1.7 GW, with projects in Spain, India, and Egypt.
Alfanar is also involved in a sustainable aviation fuel project in the United Kingdom.
Regarding infrastructure challenges, Irfan pointed out that power evacuation and grid connectivity at CTU/PGCIL substations are already constrained, with the earliest available connectivity currently scheduled for 2031.
Alfanar's strategic focus on green hydrogen aligns with India's renewable energy goals, and the company is closely monitoring policy developments to capitalize on emerging opportunities in the sector.
